Benin, on y va!

19 mei 2019 - Brussel, België

Here we go...to the historical and cultural source of wealth: Benin nowadays republic formerly known as the kingdom of Dahomey. In the 17th century the kingdom of Dahomey covered a large part of West Africa and was an affluent nation known for it's trade (goods and slaves). As a result of the massive slave trade with European nations such as Portugal and the Netherlands it's coast became known as the "slave coast". Many architectural remnants witness these relationships with the European. Unfortunately the nation could not withstand the pressure of the colonizers during the scramble for Africa and in the 18th century fell apart when the French gained control over large portions of Dahomey's territory. The nation remained under French rule and it was not until 1960 it gained complete independence. The name Benin was introduced in 1975.

Fun fact about Benin for the Black panther movie lovers: Did you know that the the idea for the adored ones aka Dora Milaje, all female army of bodyguards to King T'Challa was taken from Benin. Until the 19th century Benin had an all female corps of warriors named the Mino (our mothers) alongside the male army. They were extremely skilled and thanks to them the kingdom of Dahomey managed to gain territory and also hold off French armies as long as they did. Soldiers were a bit taken aback by female soldiers and were not so keen to kill them...

One could join voluntarily but it is also said that men who had unruly women could take their wives or sisters to join the Mino. Westerners baptised the Mino Dahomey amazones....

A little background info never hurt nobody  ;)

So today we are traveling from Brussels to Cotonou, Benin's largest city and economical centre. Porto Novo however is the capital. We have a connecting flight in Abidjan, Ivory coast and from there we will fly on to our final destination. We have a long day ahead of us but the excitement , intrigue  and a few good meals will at least keep me energized ;)

The flight is an hour delayed which is setting the tone for a different pace of life :))

I hope I get to share a story soon. Share with you later....
